President Trump nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington

"I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh's nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same", Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in statement after Kavanaugh was nominated Monday.

Grassley said a speedy confirmation wasn't necessarily the goal.

Schumer, the Senate minority leader, would have to keep all 49 Democrats in line and also convince at least one Republican to go against Kavanaugh, the report noted.

"One of which is to kind of shore up a conservative base and convince them that, despite other controversies that seem to arise around him, that they need him, and that he is delivering on something that is important to the base and that is delivering conservative judges", Pickerill said.

"Brett Kavanaugh has gotten rave reviews - rave reviews - actually, from both sides", Trump said Tuesday, a stark mischaracterization of Democrats' comments, as he left the White House for a weeklong overseas trip. Kavanaugh is meeting with members of the Senate after U.S. President Donald Trump nominated him to succeed retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy.

"My mother had an illegal abortion pre-1973, and it's something that I would never want to face or want my daughter to be facing or any of her friends", Nixon said. She voted in April 2017 to appoint Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump's Supreme Court nominee who replaced the late Justice Antonin Scalia. "In the years that Judge Kavanaugh has served on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, he has revealed his true colors, and his substantial record over that time period has proven to be a profound disappointment".

Many of Heitkamp's colleagues-as well as her Republican opponent for Senate this November, U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.,-shared their thoughts nearly immediately after the announcement.

Kavanaugh, who has never worked in the private sector, showed two investments on public disclosure forms for a year ago, which were worth a combined maximum of $65,000.

In Wednesday's podcast, Fallon said he believes Kaine is "one of the most honorable men in politics" but disagrees with his approach to Kavanaugh's nomination.

A cadre largely affiliated with the anti-Trump group Indivisible is cajoling the Democratic leader to reschedule an in-person town hall in Brooklyn after having to bow out at the eleventh hour last week.

Abortion will be perhaps the key issue in upcoming confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh's many written opinions provide insight into his thinking and also will be fodder for Senate Democrats who will seek to block his confirmation. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., all of whom are running for re-election in states Trump won in 2016.

Kavanaugh in the past has made statements about respecting precedent that could help in winning over senators, particularly Murkowski and Collins. "Brett Kavanaugh is hands down among the finest".

"I think he's going to do well", he said.
