3 young progressives look to topple longtime incumbents in New York’s Tuesday primaries

"We're having an affordability crisis in New York City", Ocasio-Cortez told NPR's Steve Inskeep on Morning Edition on Wednesday. Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in NY.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a top Democrat who has a political action committee created to support women candidates, endorsed her opponent Mr Crowley.

"I live in this community".

And out in Staten Island, community organizer Adem Bunkeddeko is facing down Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), who was first elected to the House in 2002. I felt the absence of the incumbent.

"We talked to people throughout the Midwest, visited Flint, Michigan; and finally ended our trip with a stay at Standing Rock", she said, referring to the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

"In other words", Sanders continued, "You have a middle class which is struggling and you have some people living in desperate poverty, and for too long the Democratic Party did not understand that reality".

A millennial candidate has shaken up the US Democratic Party by defeating the incumbent congressman for his seat.

At BU, Ocasio-Cortez was president of Alianza Latina, BU's largest Latin American student organization.

"I do remember with complete clarity. that she was an outstanding student", Lukes said.

As recently as November, Ocasio-Cortez worked as a bartender.

Crowley represents New York's 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Now, the huge defeat of quintessential hack Crowley by Ocasio-Cortez underscores the importance and the possibilities of what Bernie Sanders urged during a recent video interview: "Open the doors of the Democratic Party". She defeated Crowley by 15 points.

The victory of Ocasio-Cortez is a major upset to the Democratic Party, which has seen a schism between establishment and progressive Democrats since the 2016 election. "The Democratic Party would be wise to learn from this historic win".

During her campaign, she criticised Mr Crowley for his ties to Wall Street and accused him of being out of touch with his increasingly diverse constituents. She also wants to abolish ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement - the Homeland Security division that enforces United States immigration laws.

To underscore that position, she even traveled to the U.S. -Mexico border region days before the election to protest the separation of immigrant families.

When Ocasio-Cortez, 28, launched her congressional campaign, she put her focus on economic justice.

In the wake of his defeat, speculation immediately turned to Mrs. Pelosi, who has helmed House Democrats for almost 16 years.

President Donald Trump commented on the shocking result from his social media account Tuesday. But for that to happen, Democrats needs to come to terms with the split that's happening in their own big tent. "You're talking about a district that's probably in the top 5% of the most liberal districts in the country".

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary.
