Griezmann The Central Striker As France Name Team To Face Australia

France’s Antoine Griezmann during training

Eight years on from an infamous France players' strike in South Africa, from where striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home in disgrace after insulting then coach Raymond Domenech, Deschamps is in charge of a comparatively better behaved and respectful team.

The image showed Pogba's father with one of his football medals around his neck, and was accompanied by a message in French.

France were given and scored a controversial penalty against Australia after the use of VAR early in the second half.

And Deschamps, who won the World Cup as French captain back in 1998, has made some courageous calls as he looks to bring the Jules Rimet trophy back to Paris.

Griezmann had been heavily linked with a 100million euros (£88million) move to Barcelona, having past year been a reported target for Manchester United. In 2010 they drew against Ghana and beat Serbia, and came last in a very tough group in 2014.

On paper, they are paupers to France's footballing royalty, have little firepower up front and their modest defense faces a huge task to fend off their opponents' raids.

Australia and their 10,000 gold-shirted fans will be disappointed that all their hard work counted for nothing as they seek to get out of the group stage for the second time in their fifth World Cup. Numerous question marks surrounding this France team were about their character and a perceived lack of leaders - former World Cup victor and one-time team-mate of Deschamps, Christophe Dugarry, among the many to express concern about the mentality. He was named (harshly) by the Daily Mail as the worst striker in Premier League history (he wasn't great but he wasn't that bad), a claim which angered Guivarc'h.

The Manchester United man plays a key role in the French team, just as he normally does with United.

It was understandable the Socceroos would play with restraint in attack so as to avoid leaving gaping holes at the back, but there were times that their defensive attitude resulted in cheap turnovers as players refused to attempt forward passes through France's three-man midfield. Nigeria, like most African nations, disappointed the continent in Brazil four years ago and I just hope they have the focus to go far this year.

Deschamps' side are already among the favourites. They have enough attacking flair, but can they build from the back?

DF Trent Sainsbury, 7 - A calming influence, as ever, at the back for the Socceroos, Sainsbury made an exceptional challenge on Griezmann in the first half to keep the scores level. Although we ended up with 3 goals, there were frequent breaks in play.

Les Bleus, who boast one of the strongest squads in the competition, open their campaign against Australia on Saturday, and Deschamps is pleased Griezmann's future has now been sorted.

The defence may be tested due to the injuries of Samuel Umtiti and Djibril Sidibe.
