ASUS ROG Phone: clip-on cooling, was built for PUBG

Asus ROG Phone First Impressions

Asus just announced a beastly new gaming smartphone at Computex 2018, introducing the powerful ROG Phone that will likely go head to head with the Razer Phone and the Xiaomi Black Shark.

The ROG Phone can be placed into Asus' TwinView handheld accessory that comes with a second screen.

To start off with its display, the ASUS ROG smartphone features a taller, 6-inch OLED screen with Full HD+ resolution (1080×2160 pixels) and a 90Hz refresh rate for smoother visuals.

"The phone has 12 megapixels dual camera setup with f/1.8 aperture, 1.4µm pixel size, 1/2.55" Sony IMX363 sensor, LED flash, 83° field of view, PDAF, 4-axis, 4 stops optical image stabilization and AI Scene Detection. Of course we have RGBs. For security, ROG phone comes with a rear fingerprint sensor and ASUS has added a ROG logo with programmable backlight. You have the option of a static color, pulsating, strong, or cycling through various colors. or it can be turned off completely. Design and display The Asus ROG Phone is unmistakably a gamer device. One is on the left side, next to a proprietary Asus accessory port, and has USB 3.1 and 15W support.

For this vapor-chamber cooling system, which may seem odd for an Android phone, it is created to keep the device's internals cool even during your intense gaming sessions. It's a small difference, really coming down to which keys are highlighted (QWER or WASD respectively) on the mechanical keyboard, which has four-zone RGB lighting (Asus Aura Sync supported) and n-key rollover.

ASUS also has a new ROG Delta headset that can be used with the ROG Phone and features a ESS quad-DAC that helps deliver "clear, true-to-life gaming audio that gives gamers a better ability to pinpoint in-game opponents". Connecting to your TV is easy as well with the WiGig Dock. Razer's own gaming phone has some serious competition.

Entire genres of gaming have been opened up to mobile, such as MOBAs like Vainglory, while massive, premium games that would previously only have been available on PC or console are opened up to the mobile audience - the likes of PUBG and Fortnite perhaps the most notable recent examples. As far as we can tell, it boasts similarities to OnePlus' Dash Charge as the company claims it can keep the phone cool while charging quickly with the bundled ROG Phone power adapter.

The ASUS ROG Phone's X Mode can be activated by squeezing the smartphone from its side. The display has a refresh rate of 90Hz placing it in the leagues of the Razer Phone. But ROG put the charging port on the side of the phone, allowing gamers to remain in landscape mode. So in order to cater to this particular niche, ASUS announced the ROG Phone. For an ultra-low-latency wireless display connection, the WiGig Dock connects with a higher 60GHz 802.11ad WiFi. Not only can the dock be connected to an external display, it allows users to add a keyboard, mouse and other peripherals and also is backwards compatible. For selfies the phone comes with an 8-megapixel camera up front.

The mobile gaming business is huge, and is now worth $50 billion worldwide which is more than entire theatrical box office take for 2017, with a market of two billion mobile gamers.
