Raptors reserves deliver in clinching win over Wizards
Apr 29 2018 by Dustin Murphy
The Raptors had something the Wizards couldn't match during Friday's 102-92 loss, and truthfully the series: a productive second unit. He seems to be locked in - ready to face whoever team moves up.
But with Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, who had a personal series-low 16 points, resting to begin the fourth, reserves led by point guard Fred VanVleet turned around the game. Let us count the ways.
The Raptors will take a 3-2 lead in their seven-game series back to Washington for Friday's Game 6. In the words of Woody Harrelson, "Kelly, Kelly, Kelly..." DeRozan, meanwhile, did the most damage in Toronto's Game 5 win on Wednesday, with 32 points, five assists and two rebounds while shooting 12-for-24 and 3-for-4 from deep. Toronto was finally able to limit their turnovers in game five, committing only 10 turnovers after turning the ball over at least 14 times in the first four games.
When the 8-seed takes one game from the 1-seed, they have played well.
Porter underwent a minor procedure on his left leg Friday to address swelling in the area of a bruise, the team announced.
"He didn't shoot the ball, he's been struggling from the 3 for awhile now".
For just about everyone else who's had any role in this Boston-Milwaukee series, however, this is new or relatively new territory. A couple of shots didn't go his way.... "We just exploited everything individual-wise that we could do". And with one of their key players out of the lineup. But Toronto was intent on preventing a Game 7.
Also, with one of the best backcourts in the National Basketball Association, the Wizards figure to be an attractive landing spot for free agents this offseason. Games 2 produced 11 points on 3-of 9 shooting. Brooks hasn't been shy riding his stars, such as having Wall play the entire second half in Games 4 and 5. "And I saw the (Game 4) film, it was insane".
According to oddsmakers at YouWager, the Wizards are a 2-point favorite on the spread line.
One of the biggest surprises for the Toronto Raptors this season was the impact and utter dominance of their bench in the regular season. Cleveland's Kevin Love left the contest in the third quarter after colliding with Myles Turner.
It was Kyle Lowry who finished as the Raptors' top scorer though with 24 points.
A Siakam dunk punctuated the run and put Toronto up by five points with 6:51 to play. The Raptors pulled away at the end behind a great effort from Kyle Lowry.
"We tried not to make a big deal out of it while he was out, keep the other guys motivated, but he was the difference", Casey said. He is the engine, the toughness. "They're too that", Casey said after the game (via ESPN).
Head to head, the home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings, the favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Washington.
This marks the Raptors' third consecutive trip to the second round of the playoffs; they last failed to get that far in 2015, when they were swept in the opening round by the Wizards. "They closed it out for us tonight".
Next up for the Raptors?
But despite the elimination, Wall believes Washington has the foundations of a good team and expects himself and Bradley Beal to continue improving together. He considers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar a hero and he had the pleasure of interviewing him back in 2009.
