Orlando has distributed 6,700 trees since the One Person, One Tree initiative was launched by Dyer in 2015.

Friday was Arbor Day, and people across the community gathered to celebrate by planting trees in eastern Sioux Falls.

Grissom achieved the recognition by meeting the program's requirements, which involve a community creating a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and holding an Air Day observance and proclamation.

Thompson said there are 16,000 trees in right of way trees in Ames.

While the event was underway, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $2.2 million in grants for tree planting and community forestry projects across NY.

"It's also an honor for the hard work we put in to keeping up the base", Walters said. Planting a tree may be one of the easiest and most impactful ways to commemorate the significance of trees. It should be level with what's called the "root flair", which is where the tree starts to widen near the roots. They had some trouble getting through the thick sod of the area, but the loose soil underneath was less of a challenge, even to the smaller hands of the fifth-graders.

"Where we've located the tree and the type of tree are going to allow for future benefit of students during recess and after school", Trowbridge said.

Another common mistake is leaving the roots wrapped up in wire and burlap.

The emerald ash borer is a beetle that infects ash trees and causes them to die. That opened our eyes.

Although tree coverage of 19 percent is considered poor, the city's existing canopy provides $28 million a year in measurable economic and health benefits, said Sandra Albro, co-chair of the tree coalition.

For 33 years, Hinners and LaRon Klock, director of the Huron Parks and Recreation Department, have been talking to kids about the importance of planting and taking care of trees. They should stay a good distance away from houses and garages and should never be planted in the boulevard, particularly near intersections.

The kids had a chance to sing, dance, learn about the environment, and plant trees to help improve the city.

"If you go up to the top of Grandad Bluff and look down on the city, see how green it is, it's pretty remarkable".

Kelly said the city has made a commitment to protecting and preserving the city's urban forest. Root systems go out one and a half times the height of the tree. Appreciate the gift trees offer us every day.
