On the other hand, CSK is still in the top 4 with four wins from five matches.
Now they are placed sixth with four points, after Monday's match.
Dhoni and Rayudu pounded the trio mercilessly.
Chasing a mammoth target of 205, Chennai Super Kings rode on Dhoni's unbeaten 70 off 34 balls and Ambati Rayudu's 82 from 53 balls to gun down the total with 2 balls to spare.
Rayudu's blitz included 8 sixes and 3 fours as he kept his head while wickets fell around him before Dhoni strode into the middle to stamp his authority. Yuzvendra Chahal picked Sam Billings and Ravindra Jadeja in quick succession, which put the skids under CSK. But his efforts went in vain as Dhoni and Rayudu took CSK home.
Chennai needed 16 runs in the last over and Dhoni hit a six, his seventh of the night, to see his team through after Dwayne Bravo struck and a boundary and a six. There will be a gap of 30 minutes between the two events for teams to prepare.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhoni, who was also adjudged the Man of the Match, said it was a hard chase. The middle overs, though, were thoroughly dominated by the batsmen.
South Africa's AB de Villiers hailed Virat Kohli as a fantastic captain for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after admitting that the Delhi-born batsman has proved his mettle since taking over the reins from Daniel Vettori, who was the previous captain of the IPL franchise. Chennai Superkings was not playing in the last two years due to ban, and the fans of both teams are waiting for the match in which Virat Kohli will lead one team, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni will lead the other.
With all CSK bowlers taking sound beating, MSD threw the ball to his trump card Dwayne Bravo (4-33-2) who did not disappoint and dismissed de Kock (53) with a caught and bowled.
Tahir then joined the party by bagging the prized scalp of de Villiers and new man Corey Anderson (2) in the very next over to restore parity into the match.
De Villiers was certainly in the mood, launching eight sixes in his knock including three in a row off Shardul Thakur in the 13th over, as he and De Kock put on 103 for the second wicket.
Bangalore, time and again have proved that three or four superstars can not win the title, while Chennai is coming up with match-winning performances by some or the other player every game. It took de Villiers five deliveries to get off the mark, but he broke the draught in style with a straight six off Harbahajan Singh. Some big hitting by Mandeep Singh and Washington Sundar at the end ensured that RCB posted a huge score of 205 runs on the board.
