Cowboys expected to cut WR Dez Bryant

The Dallas Cowboys announced Friday that they have released veteran wide receiver Dez Bryant.

Something inside Cowboys owner Jerry Jones must twitch at the thought of releasing a franchise cornerstone player in a timely manner. Like I said, you've seen my teammates, you know?

"Jerry Jones, he loved me to death and I loved him too", Bryant said. "We need bigger plays", Jones told CBS Sports Radio's 105.3 The Fan in January. The move clears $8 million in cap space for the Cowboys. Doing so with a post-June 1 designation would have saved $12.5 million in 2018, while spreading the dead money across 2018 and 2019 with $4 million in each year.

It's always fun to speculate, and you can bet Beckham would like having his good buddy on the team, but it's hard to imagine a scenario in which Bryant ends up playing in East Rutherford.

That indicated unhappiness with Bryant beyond Jones in the organization, making it personal and inspirational, according to Bryant. Players return to the building for the start of the offseason conditioning program on Monday.

An engaged Bryant at least gives McCarron someone who can draw pass interference penalties, win some battles against lesser corners and create a short-yardage passing game inside the 10-yard line along with Kelvin Benjamin that would force the defense to make some interesting personnel decisions.

The Cowboys play the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte next season and are in the midst of a wide receiver rebuild. "I think this really increases the chances of an Earl Thomas trade". 2014 was the last time Bryant surpassed 1,000 yards in a season with 1,320 yards on 88 grabs.

It's not hard to envision Bryant joining the Patriots, teaming up with Tom Brady and enjoying a Randy Moss-esque late-career renaissance. In the final year of his rookie contract, the Pro Bowl receiver caught 88 passes for 1,320 yards and a career-high 16 touchdowns. Allen Hurns isn't a great replacement for Bryant, but he'll have to do for now. Bryant may be a star, but he's an aging star who would likely want a significant contract. "I want to get it all the way right".

Bryant fits a familiar Ravens profile - a soon-to-be 30-year-old wide receiver who has a chip on his shoulder after getting cut. Not to mention they have one of the best receivers in the game in DeAndre Hopkins. It is also worth noting that Witten spoke highly of Bryant in January when FS1's Skip Bayless asked him what went wrong with Bryant, calling him an "elite player."
