Amazon founder Bezos also privately owns the Washington Post, which won a Pulitzer Prize a year ago for its investigation of Trump's donations to charities.

Amazon declined to comment on the tweet.

Trump also wants to change Amazon's tax treatment, the Axios report said, an issue the president raised publicly a year ago when he called for an internet tax for online retailers, even though Amazon already collects sales tax on items it sells direct to customers.

Bezos responded by offering to send the Republican candidate into orbit with his Blue Origin space exploration firm.

Not all of the 136,000 other jobs added at Amazon were in the United States, but a majority of them likely were.

The U.S. Postal Service has been roiled by the same gale-force technology winds, as Americans abandoned mail for email and other electronic communication.

The e-commerce retailer has been dominating the millennial market, yet Generation Z shoppers are still opting to shop at physical stores over shopping online.

The company has become a major player in cloud computing and streaming video, and has used its research in artificial intelligence to launch a popular line of devices powered by its digital assistant Alexa. (NASDAQ:AMZN) by 1.7% in the fourth quarter, according to the company in its most recent 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Technology shares, which assisted power the rise of the U.S. stock market a year ago, are pulling it lower now. During its recent Q4 earnings report, Amazon's total revenue stood at $60.5 billion surpassing the $59.83 analysts' estimate. "Like other businesses, Amazon pays taxes on corporate income, property, payroll and unemployment insurance", the review read.

Amazon has lost more than $30bn (£21.4bn) since Trump's latest attacks on the company began. If the third-party seller is based in another state, Amazon does not collect state taxes - except in two states: Washington and Pennsylvania(CNBC).

Trump also complained December 29 that the loss-ridden U.S. Postal Service wasn't charging Amazon enough to deliver the retailer's packages.

Amazon is in early discussions with banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Capital One Financial create something akin to checking accounts that will be aimed at teenagers, according to sources who spoke to Bloomberg.
