Virginia in the South was ousted in a historic upset by No. 16 seed UMBC.

Experienced powerhouse programs like Kansas, Duke and Villanova headline the field, but there are a few teams worth keeping your eye on entering the Sweet 16.

2015-16 was a season in which Syracuse was ranked as a 9th seed and yet again made another Final Four run.

And just to show that eliminating a No. 1 seed before the Sweet Sixteen begins, the Xavier Musketeers-the top team in the West Regional-fell victim to the Florida State Seminoles 75-70 Sunday night. But sophomore Malik Newman took over, the Big 12 Tournament's most valuable player hitting four 3-pointers and pouring in 28 points in an 83-79 victory.

Four of the conference's teams remain alive in the tournament. The Wildcats have played the best the most consistently this season.

"My good vibes are coming from how this team's playing, how unselfishly they play", Villanova coach Jay Wright said after Saturday's win against Alabama. "With a lot of national and local media, we had to make sure everyone was taken care of".

The Wildcats have some institutional knowledge of Huggins' switching array of zone defenses stemming from their history together in the Big East.

With both teams storming into Thursday with a head of steam, we could be in store for a battering-ram clash in the frontcourt, while the collection of guards on each roster knocks down plenty of key shots.

Texas A&M is only one of two Texas teams making it to the Sweet 16. Haas warmed up before Sunday's win against Butler but an official said shortly before tipoff that the big man's brace hadn't been approved for competition. The Sooners' 26 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1984 are the 10th most in the nation during that span, behind only Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Arizona, Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Syracuse and UCLA.

No. 1 Kansas (-4) vs.

But, both must first survive their treacherous Round 3 match-ups Thursday and Friday, before moving along the road to the Final-Four.

Clemson is in the Sweet 16 for the first time in 21 years.

Duke topped Syracuse 60-44 as a 13.5-point home favorite in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup February 24. These were three of the initial favorites to win it all, setting up some championship caliber matchups before the Final Four.

The Big 12 champion Bears (33-1) scored 13 straight in the third quarter to put away a scrappy MI bunch. Much like Ohio State, the Tigers were considered one of the most vulnerable No. 5 seeds expected to either lose in the first round against a viable mid-major (Clemson handled New Mexico State) or second round by a better-seeded No. 4.

So far, these are not good games.

"Any time you get to play in the tournament you're delighted", said Kruger.

No. 5 Kentucky (-5) vs. It would seem though that the Wildcats roar will be no more as they face Kentucky in the Sweet 16, and 888 Sport agrees and posted lopsided odds of 1.38 for Kentucky, and, 3.05 for Kansas State.

#16 UMBC 43 #9 Kansas State 50: An ugly game put an end to the Cinderella story of UMBC, turning the ball over 17 times and failing to recreate their 3-point shooting performance from the first game.

The way reigning champion North Carolina got bounced from the tournament in an 86-65 loss to Texas A&M might have been the top storyline on any other tournament day.

On the surface, you might not think the Ramblers have a turnover problem; after all, they finished the regular season with a plus-0.9 average turnover margin and were sensational in their tournament-opening victory over the Miami Hurricanes, finishing with a 16-10 advantage in forced turnovers.
