Texas A&M blows out defending champion North Carolina
Mar 19 2018 by Lorena Waters
Texas A&M spends $75 million on a football coach and becomes a basketball school. As excited as Williams might be about Woods' return to the PGA Tour, Williams will be thrilled if the Tar Heels can handle the Aggies' size and advance to the Sweet 16. Nevada staged a dramatic rally Friday to beat Texas 97-93 in overtime after trailing by 14 early in the second half.
Stunningly, reigning national champion North Carolina found no match for any of that. Instead, the Aggies roared back for an 80-79 victory capped by Chennedy Carter's 3-pointer, the women's program version of Acie Law's shot that sunk Texas.
However, most of the next few minutes consisted of North Carolina threatening to make a move only to have the Aggies converting at the other end, often on fast breaks.
The second-seeded Purdue Boilermakers are moving on to the Sweet 16, with a 76-73 win over the No. 10 Butler Bulldogs on Sunday.
It's just incredible the Aggies are in the conversation.
Update:Texas A&M has a 42-28 lead over North Carolina at the half. A ideal storm of injuries, suspensions and an improved SEC cast a pall of skepticism over Texas A&M if they could ever rekindle the mojo they'd shown in the early season. After getting multiple chances to tie the game on the final possession and failing to convert during a memorable loss to No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 last season, the Mountaineers will have a lot of motivation when they tip against the Wildcats.
Well, that's ancient history.
"We hang our hats on playing defense every day", Gilder said.
The games should be exciting to watch, especially if Texas A&M and Auburn can carry some momentum into the matchups after big wins in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Lots of Aggies need to be sending Kennedy congratulatory emails.
The public is behind North Carolina for this game. Against Providence, A&M had to hold off the Friars late surge and it looked like the same might happen against North Carolina.
MI secured a spot in the 2018 NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 with a win over Houston on Saturday. It was only the second time UNC has lost a NCAA Tournament game in the state of North Carolina in 34 previous tries.
That's the same with the women.
That same silence spread to the Carolina locker room afterward as players tried to make sense of the abrupt ending for a team that had played for the ACC championship just last weekend and appeared primed for a run to a third straight Final Four.
Next up for Purdue in the Sweet 16 is Texas Tech and coach Chris Beard.
Sunday's win that set all of that up wasn't even in question for most of the evening.
Here are the grades following the Aggies' dominant win (hint, it's all good). And like we've seen last night on the TV, it's anybody's game. "I've never lost to a building, but this has been very comfortable for us".
Jimbo Fisher's first spring training at A&M gets underway and the buzz will be hoops. Kennedy gives Starks some credit for the Aggies' success thus far. With skepticism shrouding No. 1 Xavier, the West's top seed, UNC had been a trendy pick for the Final Four and beyond.
