Romantic fantasy "The Shape of Water" won the best picture Oscar on Sunday, the film industry's most prestigious honor, on a night where themes of female empowerment and activism nearly overshadowed the awards.

Kimmel had that role in mind without input from De Luca and Todd, who are returning as well for their second year as Oscar producers.

Dark crime comedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" has begun to pull away in late betting for the industry's biggest prize, but Oscarologists believe fairy tale romance "The Shape of Water" and socially conscious horror movie "Get Out" will make it a photo finish.

① If somebody trips when walking up to receive their award.

My numbers 2, 3, 4 and 10 were nominated for Best Picture, and numbers 5 and 7 are up for Best Documentary.

1973 - Marlon Brando wins a best actor award for his performance as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather", but boycotts the ceremony to protest how Native Americans are portrayed in movies and television.

The wave of bad press about both projects could clear the way for a dark horse victor like the satirical horror smash "Get Out", the comedy-of-age comedy "Lady Bird" or the intense World War II epic "Dunkirk". With cinematic masterpieces such as "Lady Bird" and "The Shape of Water", the competition this year is intense.

The movie about a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with a unusual river creature - a fable about the mistreatment of the powerless - had gone into the ceremony with a leading 13 nominations, and won a total of four Academy Awards.

Let me put it this way: "Water" has a domestic box office take of $55 million - far below the threshold for public awareness - while "Three Billboards" weighs in at $50 million.

The first Oscar of the night, for best supporting actor, went to Sam Rockwell for his acclaimed turn as a racist, violent police officer in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

Who should win: Five of the films nominated were in my top 10 of 2017 and others were part of my honorable mentions. Audiences are captivated by the sartorial elegance of the red carpet, by the rhapsodic air circulating these people and by the chance to see the film they loved, the film that punctured their heart, that made them laugh, that made them cry, get recognition it deserves. The "Star Wars" franchise has enjoyed enormous commercial success since then, but Mr. Kuntz doubted that academy voters would pick a "Star Wars" film for best picture.

Washington also had a nomination past year for best picture for "Fences", which he directed and co-produced. They should have given the 10th spot to "Blade Runner 2049". "Best Actress certainly looks like Frances McDormand's award to win", predicted ABC News' Chris Connelly. That's usually a really good sign and it's why I'm giving it the edge over "Three Billboards". However, if you don't have a cable subscription or can't get the signal on your TV for some reason, your options for streaming the Oscars live this year are.

With the 90 Academy Awards just around the corner, Oscar aficionados will be redrafting their carefully curated list of predictions.

"Honestly, I haven't watched all of these titles yet, but I think the likeliest victor is Coco, because it's one of last year's best-known animations".

What will win: If Guillermo Del Toro wasn't standing in the way of Best Director, I thought Gerwig would win that, but the former indie darling wrote a tremendous screenplay there. Additionally, it doesn't have huge competition at the moment.

The problem is this: Those are the categories that win or lose Oscar pools. I did not see this coming. She is one of my favorite actors, and I'm actively rooting against her, as if she did steroids or deflated balls.
