U.S. gold medal brings Curling community together

The Swedish women are among the sport's dominant powers, with five medals - three gold - in the six Olympics since curling joined the Winter Games. John Shuster, John Landsteiner, Matt Hamilton and Tyler George all received the wrong medals.

As one fan in the crowd put it, it's a story so wonderful, they should make a movie out of it.

Utica Curling Club Board Member Mitch Rubinovich says it was a long time coming, but the historic match was well worth the wait, "Everyone is proud of the American men".

USA Curling reached out to Delta Airlines via Twitter and asked them for a modest request-upgrades for the gold medal winners.

Sugar Land junior Michelle Dang said she was impressed by the skill of the teenagers all throughout the games.

The United States is not known as a curling powerhouse.

"We knew we were going to lose", Swedish skip Niklas Edin said. There are probably one a few specific parts of America where curling is a sport even a percentage of people play. It was sweet redemption for the USA team, which finished last and second-to-last in the last two Olympics.

The men's team did eventually get their proper medals, and whichever women's team wins the gold will not be cheated from theirs.

The team became known in curling circles as Team Reject, a moniker it came to embrace.

Curling is also a relatively new sport for the Olympics, so the country's success in it could prove beneficial to the sport's growth nationally.

But the resurgent United States quartet had beaten defending champion Canada 5-3 in the semi-final, and in front of a crowd which included Ivanka Trump and Swedish King Carl Gustaf, they outplayed their opponents to secure USA's ninth gold of these Winter Games.

Speaking on the decisive blow, Shuster said: "During the entire end you could kind of feel it building, [Sweden's] margin for error got incredibly small". Their journey was complete. And the gold medalists entered a packed ballroom following a bagpiper through a canopy of curling brooms held up by local players. The Americans did not medal. But they have deftly maneuvered through the early stages of the competition by leaning on each other. "This morning by phone, they got a pep talk from Mr. T".

"I look back on 2006 and standing on the podium and getting an Olympic medal, and it being one of the most incredible moments of my life", Shuster said.
