"ATTACKS WOULD END!" At the Wednesday meeting, billed as a "listening session", Trump also promised "very strong" background checks on gun owners. He has also floated - in listening sessions, on Twitter, and most recently at CPAC - giving guns to school workers.
"I am a survivor", Julia Cordover, a senior class president at the Florida high school, told Trump.
Trump's plan to arm teachers has created an intense backlash. Sen. "If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly", he said. He did not indicate how he arrived at this number.
Later that month he said, "I don't want to have guns in classrooms, although in some cases teachers should have guns in classrooms, frankly".
Trump instead favors "concealed carry", whereby teachers are given guns they can use to shoot back. He resigned from the sheriff's office on Thursday.
"We need serious proposals to prevent violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from acquiring firearms", NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said in a statement published by The Hill. "He was not a credit to law enforcement". Those teachers, coaches, custodians and administrators carrying concealed weapons would be eligible for bonuses.
"No police officer, no educator of any note is advocating that what we need is more weapons on school campuses rather than fewer", said Emanuel.
Meanwhile, Mark Barden, whose son was killed in the 2012 school shooting in CT, said he didn't believe more guns were the answer. "It's not bad, it's good!"
Trump has called for raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21, a proposal the National Rifle Association has rejected. "Our office buildings, our movies stars, our politicians, they're all more protected than our children at school".
"I didn't wake up thinking this was going to happen on Valentine's Day and think that I'm gonna be thrown into this", Pollack said, "but I can't just let my daughter's death be in vain". "I don't want to take away guns". People like to blame them, and they do have power and all of that, but they want to do things.
