Honda Classic Power Rankings: Top ten golfers at PGA National
Feb 23 2018 by Dustin Murphy
Larger and louder crowds are likely at the week's Honda Classic with Tiger Woods playing here for the first time since 2014.
Woods also is getting more comfortable with the demands of the PGA Tour in his latest comeback from a long layoff. Back then, the tournament was held at Weston Hill G&C.
It is six years since McIlroy won this tournament and, as he continues his build-up to The Masters, he returns to PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after missing last year's tournament as he recovered from the rib injury that blighted his year. "But I am very happy to get in there with a good score to start out". And more of him soon.
No. 17 (par 3, 190 yards): With the tees back a bit today, hits 200-yard first shot straight at the stick but watches ball bound into the rough, just barely left of the fringe.
Rickie Fowler is the oddsmakers' favorite at +800, which is no surprise. That year, he was forced to withdraw mid-tournament after suffering back spasms. The first two events were won by major winners Tom Weiskopf and Lee Trevino, and in addition to Nicklaus, they've been joined by the likes of Johnny Miller, Larry Nelson, Tom Kite, Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange, Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Mark O'Meara, and Padraig Harrington.
[I] s Tiger overrated?
Former world No. 1 and four-time major victor Rory McIlroy - playing in his current hometown - also ended the round two over alongside Garcia. Few golfers are hitting the ball as well as Stallings, as he has a top-25 finish at the Waste Management Open, a seventh place finish at Pebble Beach and a fourth place finish at the Genesis Open. He's encouraged by the result, though, and says that it doesn't quite reflect his quality of play.
Alex Noren (+3000) is on a run of form and is still listed pretty long. After an encouraging T23 at the Farmers Insurance, he once again struggled with his driving accuracy (he hit 46.43 percent of fairways) and missed the cut at the Genesis last week.
Fowler is one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour, with both his fellow players and with the fans.
So is Tiger overrated? Knox has just two career PGA victories, but there's enough here to consider him with +5000 odds.
"I just miss the rush of competing for a green jacket; I've been doing it since I was 19 years old and sitting on the sidelines is not fun", Woods said on Wednesday. But I don't think it's imperative. I was super-nervous. The second time I played with him I was like, 'OK, he's just like the rest of us.' He's a welcoming guy, but there is an aura about him that you have to get used to. A second place at Memorial in 2017 adds to the feeling that he likes these hard and fast conditions.
