Jose Mourinho, like a petulant teenager angered by a video game, benched Paul Pogba for Saturday's game against Huddersfield, three days after player and manager argued with each other during Manchester United's 2-0 loss at Tottenham.

Put to him Sanchez played a lot of different positions in Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Huddersfield, Mourinho responded: "Exactly that's the point, that's the objective".

Mourinho told a news conference ahead of United's game versus Huddersfield Town that, with 13 games remaining, his team must now aim to be "the first of the last, we have to try to finish second".

"Alexis is a fantastic player but not a prima donna", Mourinho said. "I couldn't be happier with his performance". It was such a small stadium that the atmosphere there was incredible. Romelu Lukaku did not look very exciting against Tottenham and it is possible the Belgian is feeling a bit exhausted.

"So as Manchester United manager, obviously means much more but I think it belongs to every sportsman as one of the biggest tragedies and at the same time is a crucial point in Manchester United history, the reaction, the strength, the union after that situation".

Mourinho also said that Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who limped off injured against Spurs, has undergone knee surgery and will be out for at least two months.

Jose Mourinho lambasted Manchester United's ridiculous start against Tottenham as they conceded within 11 seconds before going on to lose at Wembley.

Manchester United: De Gea 6, Valencia 7, Smalling 6, Rojo 6, Shaw 6, Matic 6, McTominay 6, Mata 7, Lingard 7, Sanchez 8, Lukaku 7.

Sanchez has featured twice for United since arriving, helping the team to a 4-0 win in the FA Cup against Yeovil Town on his debut.

However, after the break, Huddersfield's resistance ended, when Mata delivered an inch-perfect cross for Romelu Lukaku, who volleyed home from close range.

Sanchez then added a second on a comfortable afternoon for the home side, tucking home a rebound after seeing his initial penalty saved by Huddersfield keeper Jonas Lossl.

"We knew the distance to the leader was considerable even before this match", said the Red Devils boss.
