Tiger Wood makes the cut at Torrey Pines

Tiger Wood makes the cut at Torrey Pines

"So hopefully, I have a bit of a better game tomorrow".

Woods didn't have to race off to the airport Friday, after all.

Same goes for Rahm, who's chasing that No. 1 ranking a year after being ranked 137th at this time and winning his first career PGA event here at Torrey Pines.

Tiger will say he's frustrated with all the missed fairways and having to grind on every single hole. He bogeyed the par-3 eighth hole to fall outside the cutline, then birdied the ninth, making a cut in a PGA Tour event for the first time since the 2015 Wyndham Championship.

This time a year ago the Spaniard was world 137.

More than anything else, Woods seems to have a healthier attitude. "It's been a while". Typical. Just me going out there fighting for whatever I can get.

"I didn't hit it worth a darn all day", he said.

"I was just trying to get under par for the day", he said of his inward push.

For Woods to compete with a new generation of stars who have never been intimidated by his former greatness, he's going to have to do better than shoot around par. "Trying to give myself the correct angles and I did that most of the day".

"So I'm happy coming back from that".

On another warm, picturesque day at Torrey Pines, Woods got up and down seven times in nine chances to salvage a 2-under 70 in the third round.

He was at even-par 72 after Thursday's round on the South Course, when he frequently showed frustration with the state of his game.

Palmer boasts a one-shot advantage from defending champion Jon Rahm at the top of the leaderboard after a five-under 67 took him to 11 under after 36 holes.

But another wiild drive on the 13th - again missing way to the left - forced Woods to take a penalty drop.

That was the worst of it.

His monster birdie putt was greeted by a loud yell of "Way to go Tiger, right in the gut - you can still win this". He would finish the job on his next stroke, dropping to -1 on the tournament and putting him above the cut line.

Woods relied on a number of big putts and a sharp short game for a decent score Saturday.

Woods problems off the tee continued on his back nine. It's quite nice if they don't know me.

"It had not been happening".

Woods teed off on the 10th hole and as on Friday struggled off the tee, finding just one of seven fairways in his first nine holes. The final two rounds will be played on the South Course.

Despite the knowledge that he faced a grim battle to make it through to the weekend, Woods was in a fun-loving mood early on. "It's not as far away as I thought it would be, just starting out and not being able to play professional golf for two years". I haven't played the tour in a while.

"That's Tiger, not playing well and just going with what he's got to make it happen", four-time PGA Tour victor Hoffman told reporters.
