Sloane Stephens beats Madison Keys in US Open final
Sep 10 2017 by Lorena Waters
Sixteen-year-old Amanda Anisimova and 13-year-old Cori Gauff will contest an all-American US Open girls' singles final on Sunday.
Stephens, who had outclassed the likes of Roberta Vinci, Maria Sharapova-slayer Anastasija Sevastova and Venus Williams, was in fine form against 15th seed Keys in the final. The first was Kim Clijsters from Belgium in 2009.
When it was over, the two Americans shared a long embrace on the court.
"To be able to share my first Slam experience with a really close friend when it's also her first Slam is a really special moment".
"The hint was, like, you should buy me a bag or something tomorrow", Keys said with a smile.
Though Stephens acknowledged "when anyone has "Grand Slam champion" in front of their name, it changes things a little bit", she said she does not believe she has ascended to a higher level or will be a target in future tournaments.
But that deserted her in the final and the longer it went on, the worst it got.
Q. You seemed pretty stunned, obviously, after the match, but when you met your mom up in the stands, the emotions really seemed to come out. She took home a $3.7 million (3.07 million euros) top prize in what is the biggest victory of her career. "I didn't know if everything was still going to be right" - Sloane Stephens. "How insane. I actually won the U.S. Open".
"It's incredible. I don't know how I got here".
In the same year, Stephens reached the quarter-final of Wimbledon.
But what Rubin remembers most about her match was a disappointing 6-4 6-0 loss to Tamarine Tanasugarn.
And Stephens was left stunned when a reporter referred to her making just six unforced errors against compatriot Keys.
Keys is 22; Stephens is 24.
"Sloane is truly one of my favorite people", Keys said. She is the daughter of swimmer Sybil Smith and professional American football player John Stephens. "On top of that, I'm really sad for me, but I'm so happy for her". He brought me clothes from, like, four weeks ago that he still had.
She lost her next match, too, in Washington. Her opponent, Madison Keys, most definitely did.
Stephens had to wait until 2015 to win her maiden WTA title - Citi Open. As Williams covered the cross-court passing shot, Stephens lunged backwards and flicked the ball up the line, as Williams could only look on.
"I would 1,000 percent go". "I told her I wished there could have been a draw. I mean, talk about a comeback". "I had surgery January 23, and if someone had told me then that I would win the US Open, 'It's impossible, ' I would have said". I actually won the US Open.
While it wasn't one of Keys best days, this match was most certainly a crowning achievement from start to finish for Stephens. "Just like, wow", she said later.
Stephens was sidelined for 11 months because of a stress fracture in her left foot. For example, Serena Williams has won 23, Roger Federer has won 19 and Rafael Nadal 15. Sloane was locked in and determined to hoist the trophy. It's the 12th time that has happened in the Open Era. "These wonderful women continue to change the game and bring excellence, power, finesse and change to tennis". Stephens became only the fifth unseeded player to win a women's Slam title.
