Who is Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber's new CEO?

Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi will be offered the job as Uber's new CEO

Barry Diller, the Expedia chairman, will no doubt cast a wide net on behalf of the company as part of its CEO search.

Ride-sharing service Uber has picked Expedia's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi as its new CEO, according to U.S. media reports.

Recode's Kara Swisher and The New York Times' Mike Isaac both tweeted Sunday that Khosrowshahi, Expedia's CEO since 2005, will take the helm.

Uber's board of directors had also considered Jeff Immelt, the former CEO of General Electric (GE), and Meg Whitman, the head of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE, Tech30), sources said. Kalanick was reportedly angling to keep a significant amount of control with the board, a prospect that Whitman opposed.

Whitman was perhaps the most sought-after of the many female candidates for the Uber job, all of whom had either withdrew their applications or been ruled out.

Unlike Khosrowshahi, neither of those candidates hails directly from the transportation industry. And since Expedia is based in Bellevue, Washington, he has remained a Silicon Valley outsider, offering a contrast to the "tech bro" culture Kalanick established at Uber.

San Francisco: The name Dara Khosrowski should sound familiar.

But Uber's future became murkier this year when the company was pummeled by scandal after scandal, including sexual harassment accusations in the workplace, a Department of Justice criminal investigation into some of its methods, and an intellectual property dispute with a self-driving auto rival. Uber's 14-member team has been looking for a new chief executive since former CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick resigned in June under pressure from investors. Last month, Whitman denied having any interest in the position saying she is "not going anywhere" and added that "speculation about my future and Uber has become a distraction".

CEO of Expedia, Inc.

Apart from overhauling Uber's culture, Khosrowshahi will be charged with expanding the company's business and navigating a hard regulatory environment in cities around the world. I have vast respect for the company & founders - Travis, Garrett and Ryan. Previously rumors were that Kara Swisher of Recode would be the CEO of Uber. Though the company now has a CEO, it still has no CFO, and there are nearly half a dozen other unfilled executive positions, as top talent continues to exit the company. Travis was very instrumental in establishing Uber as a brand over the years which saw the company expanding to various countries in last few years.
