UFC 214 Preview: Jones squares off as big favourite vs. Cormier

Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar

There's no telling how the fight between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones at UFC 2014 will turn out.

And both Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger weighed 145lb as they fight for the vacant UFC women's featherweight championship. Daniel Cormier will look to get Jones down and dominate him with disciplined ground and pound.

The UFC loaded UFC 214 with three title fights, in part to make sure the fans still have value for their purchase in case Cormier-Jones fell apart once again. Possibly. His post fight interview showed a honest and humbled Jones, even thanking his once hated rival Cormier for being an inspiration.

It was the smallest favorite Jones had been in his career, and despite having only fought once in the two and a half years since, he won't drop lower ahead of tonight's rematch with Cormier at UFC 214.

Cormier goes into his light heavyweight title defense with a 19-1 record in his MMA career, and a 8-1 record inside the Octagon in the UFC.

"I would love to fight Brock Lesnar", Jones told fans during a recent Facebook chat, according to MMA Mania.

Lesnar was suspended one year for a doping violation following his UFC 200 fight with Mark Hunt. And with him only fighting once in the 30 months since UFC 182, whether he's the Jon Jones of old remains an open question. He won the title fairly, and when called upon, fought and won. That could improve the price on Jones, who appears to be in peak shape and certainly has the motivation to take back the strap he lost past year.

Now he can finally move on from Thompson and focus on the next challenge. At times Cormier looked like he was grasping for thin air. On the outside, however, doubts linger about the youngest champion in UFC history following a tumultuous couple of years.

The two couldn't have been on more opposite sides of the spectrum, but at the same time, on equal footing entering Saturday's rubber match. Evinger revealed in comments leading up to the fight that her contract for the title fight includes a rematch clause.

The former Invicta bantamweight champion is riding a nine-fight win streak, with the majority of her wins coming via knockout or submission. After Strikeforce was shuttered, Cyborg signed on with Invicta FC, the all-female fight promotion helmed by industry veteran Shannon Knapp, whose events were nearly immediately picked up to be broadcast on UFC FIGHT PASS.

An emotional Cormier could not hold back his tears after the loss, with the veteran fighter later saying "I don't even know what happened" in a brief post-fight interview.

Defending champion Cormier opted to leave his suit on.

Tyron Woodley may the strongest and most athletic welterweight, but his submission skills are nowhere near the level of Demain Maia's.
