Celtics Select Jayson Tatum With No. 3 Pick In Draft
Jun 25 2017 by Dustin Murphy
The Phoenix Suns took the next step toward building what they hope will grow into a championship contender Friday as General Manager Ryan McDonough and Coach Earl Watson introduced Josh Jackson, Davon Reed and Alec Peters as its 2017 NBA Draft class. "It was a dream come true just to be drafted, and to be drafted by the best franchise in National Basketball Association history, I'm excited to be here", said Tatum shortly after he showed off his No. 11 Celtics jersey for the first time. I like the fit with Tatum to the Celtics - he's a pure scorer who should learn to share the ball under Brad Stevens and will complement Jaylen Brown well.
Although neither the Celtics nor the Red Claws has made an official announcement, numerous fans at Thursday night's draft party had heard through the grapevine that Scott Morrison, who led the Red Claws to three Atlantic Division titles in his three years, would be joining Stevens as an assistant coach for the Celtics. They had some helping hands, namely those of Suns GM Ryan McDonough.
"He's a very driven guy", McDonough said.
Markkanen was asked about potentially playing with or replacing Porzingis, who team president Phil Jackson told MSG Network on Wednesday the Knicks are taking calls about after he left NY without attending his exit interview.
Tatum has a chance to be great.
Asked how confident he is that the Celtics can make a splashy move this summer, Ainge responded, "I'm confident". (He'd say it even if it weren't.) The choice between Tatum and Jackson was a fine one to have: Both had excellent freshmen years and both project well to the National Basketball Association. "He really wanted me to go up there and work out for them, and I was all for it". It's like you're playing poker with guys. He was subsequently charged with property damage, according to the Associated Press. "For me and my mom for everything we've been through and even for my Dad and everybody back home in St. Louis and the Duke family and everyone is happy for me".
For starters, Boston wasn't in love with any one player in this draft.
He did say family is the most important thing.
Well, he's not a guard - which is what the top four or five guys in this draft were. That continued in the second round, with Wojnarowski's colleague, Shams Charania, spoiling numerous picks before deputy commissioner Mark Tatum was able to announce them. "We just couldn't get anything done". Ainge said that they never talked to Josh. During his lone collegiate season, he averaged 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game, all while leading the Blue Devils to a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Was Ainge angry? You bet he was angry!
That is the downside of being one-and-done players.
He said that no one in the entire Boston Celtics organization talked to Josh. He's a terrific kid and a good player. "He can defend his position and he can hit an open shot". "I've been doing my work here and I'm just waiting for tomorrow night and whatever happens, happens". "I felt good about both my workouts and am blessed to have the opportunity to be here".
As for the part of one-and-done players, their draft processes are always tainted with uncertainty. He originally declined to meet with the team because he didn't believe their front office would "seriously consider" him at No. 1 overall.
"It got pretty lonely", Peters said. I know someone wrote that that was difference, but that's not the case. "It's time to compete against him".
