Fresh-faced Germans made to sweat in 3-2 win over Australia

A youthful Germany side were certainly the dominant force against the Socceroos and could have made the scoreline more flattering had they been more clinical, while a poor performance from goalkeeper Bernd Leno helped their opponents snatch their two goals.

Socceroos veteran Tim Cahill says the time is right for Australia to shock inexperienced Germany on Monday and prove themselves at the Confederations Cup.

Fresh-faced Germany, with only 138 worldwide appearances between the starters, were made to work harder than expected in Group B on Monday.

At the end of the match Germany on the counter was much closer to the fourth goal than Australia to a sensational draw.

"Who'd expect everything to be ideal after only 10 days together?" Loew said through a translator.

"There is no question, it's a team full of character and it's not easy to play well against the best team in the world", said the 51-year-old Postecoglou.

For Loew this eight-team World Cup warm-up competition is merely a stepping stone on the path to defending the title won in Brazil in 2014.

"To hopefully get that mark would be a massive honour in my career", he said.

"But it was encouraging we were able to do the things we wanted in the second half - we just need to put it all together now".

Celtic star Tom Rogic featured for Australia against Germany in the Confederations Cup on Monday.

The livewire Goretzka burst in behind the defence and fell under the desperate challenge of Massimo Luongo, and Draxler despatched the spot-kick emphatically to send his side in 2-1 ahead.

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can came on as a second-half substitute as Germany held on for a 3-2 win over Australia in the Confederations Cup.

Leno produced another howler after the break, when he spilled a tame shot straight to Tomi Juric, who punished his error with a simple tap-in.

The Australian threat persisted but Germany clung on to collect three points in the Fisht Stadium, where around 20,000 seats were empty. We are getting an ok price on this so perhaps this is the best bet to make on this match.

It was an average performance by Germany who only did what was required to take the victory in their opening match in Russian Federation, and they will struggle against better sides in their current form. A late substitute against Germany, Australia's Tim Cahill could well bring the experience he has acquired in 98 worldwide appearances to bear against the Indomitable Lions.

There was to be no equaliser, and Postecoglou was especially disappointed about the way his side started the game.

What Postecoglou does care about is not being given credit for bringing young players into the squad. Having beaten the offside trap, he turns and moves towards goal, takes three touches where two would suffice and thus moves wider than ideal, before dragging a shot wide of the far post.
