At that championship, there also is a particular type of player who has a unique chance to win.
The city is home to 2016 U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, four-time major victor Rory McIlroy, 2014 Open runner-up Rickie Fowler and, of course, Tiger Woods. Responding to critics of Erin Hills - who said, after numerous low scores were posted Thursday, that the course wasn't hard enough - Hadwin took to Twitter: "For all of those ppl that thought this course was too easy, turn your tvs on".
Having eagled the first hole, Casey recovered from a bogey on the tenth to card three birdies in the next eight holes.
"Just because of how competitive he is", Jones said. I thought I played pretty solid on Tuesday.
"I played really solid from the moment we got here on Monday and all the way through (Sunday)", Koepka said. "I don't get those very often". I don't want to say I was homesick, I was just exhausted of golf, exhausted of traveling.
"I've no real concerns". I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did.
"Third round I was just a little frustrated, especially after I started. It's simple", Johnson said.
Li, who turned professional at age 16 and won the Volvo China Open past year on the European Tour, said he started pressing in the third round.
McIlroy finished at 16-under 268 when he won on rain-softened Congressional in the 2011 U.S. Open.
Only Matsuyama displayed that kind of scoring ability Sunday.
Not many can boast a great uncle inducted into the college hall of fame for two sports, but then not many have taken such an unusual journey to the top.
Only three players had ever reached 12 under at any point of a US Open before 2017. He then calmly sank the putt for the record round and to take a two-shot lead into the clubhouse. I felt like I've underachieved. "Whether I play well or not in that situation next time, that's a different story but I feel fine". Without a card on any tour when he got out of Florida State, he filled his passport with stamps from the most unlikely outposts in golf while playing the minor leagues on the European Tour - Kazakhstan and Kenya, Portugal and India and throughout Europe. Thomas finished tied for ninth at 8 under.
The best of the action from the final...
"I'm glad a qualified and was able to play".
"It would be a lot of fun to see this place firm and fast", Fowler said.
Shots covered the field after the halfway cut. This was the goal going into the week to put ourselves in position to be in contention on Sunday.
Brooks Koepka broke open a tight tournament with three straight birdies on the 14th through 16th holes and won the U.S. Open with a confident and steady show that bordered on the spectacular. "I just felt like I should be winning more. It's truly an honor", Koepka said.
American Brooks Koepka finished on a record-equalling 16-under-par to clinch his first major title as he won the US Open at the Erin Hills golf course in Wisconsin.
Koepka's victory comes in perhaps the most prestigious tournament on the tour and the biggest of all the major championships.
"But to win my first major in the United States is pretty special". It's probably one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and to do it on Father's Day is pretty neat.
On Saturday, Fowler exploited the benign conditions at Erin Hills to haul himself back into the frame. The soonest that could happen is 2027.
