This is great for artists and others who prefer Apple's tablets, but also marks a new bragging right for Apple.

"There is so much momentum building around these speakers that it would be hard for Apple not to come out with one", said industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights &Strategy.

Starting with the latter, High Sierra will switch to the more modern Apple File System as the new default. New iMacs and MacBook laptops start shipping Monday.

In a welcome change, Apple has bumped the base model iPad Pro capacity to 64GB and goes from there to 256GB and 512GB. The iPhone, with Apple Maps, is now a much better sat nav replacement, with Speed Limits and Lane Guidance information when driving.

Besides playing music, Apple's Siri digital assistant will also respond to requests for information and other help around the house.

Siri will add inflection to her voice, to say phrases three different ways. A new Siri watchface predicts what you'll want to see when you look at your wrist, while improvements to the device's fitness features will let you track new types of high-intensity workouts.

It'll come with a new feature called ProMotion. The Safari Web browser was also updated to block autoplay videos and limit targeting of ads.

To some extent, Apple is playing catch-up with Google, which has already launched its Tango augmented reality platform - though Tango devices are still hard to come by.

It also said its new Mac High Sierra operating software offers new features for developers designing virtual reality games and experiences.

Amazon introduced the Echo speaker, featuring its Alexa assistant, in 2015. This was followed by a bunch of new smaller upgrades to the activity app on the Apple Watch.

Apple Pay saw plenty of love at the event, with person-to-person payments now a thing, being integrated into the iMessage platform.

iOS 11 is due out later this year (likely in the September timeframe) with the beta out today for developers.

You can now send a contact money, directly, with Apple Pay in Messages.

Apple's Siri assistant will be integrated into the $349 ($NZ490) speaker, and can make music recommendations that pair with the company's Apple Music service, send text messages, check news and sports scores and control compatible home gadgets like lightbulbs and thermostats. The extra space also means the 10.5-inch iPad Pro can be used with a full-sized keyboard, whether on the screen in iOS or as a clip-on attachment.

Apple's iOS is getting an update this fall.

Apple's iMacs will be souped up with Intel's new Kaby Lake processors, which should be faster and more powerful. Users will also find how-to guides and content related to apps on the App Store so it's going to have a more editorial aspect to it now.
