Shea Theodore celebrates a goal with the bench

After sustaining a 7-1 drubbing in Game 6 that ensured this second-round best-of-seven series would go the distance, the Anaheim Ducks showed veteran poise to take Game 7 over the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 Wednesday night to move on to the Western Conference finals.

The 2017 Edmonton Oilers are so damn good that attempts to award victories to their second-round opponent in the playoffs has triggered the radar of fans in markets where the Oilers aren't even well liked.

It was Caggiula's third goal in the last four games, and added to the Ducks' recent history of Game 7 woe. They've fought through controversy and ridiculous calls that went against them to thump Anaheim in Game 6. They will sure be well rested compared to the Ducks or Oilers. Yes, it lacked for post-season experience, and that was seen as something of a detriment. Overall, they are 2-6 in Game 7.

For once, wait till next year sounds more like a promise than an excuse.

Anaheim advances to the Western Conference finals against the Nashville Predators.

For some people, a stop at the airport is a time not to be bothered. We've all heard of a coach throwing his players under the bus. "(It's) just like we had when we were kids - what my parents threw during the playoffs.

Where: Honda Center, Anaheim, Calif.

Macdonald expects the same will happen for this game, so fans who missed out on Tuesday's sale may yet have the chance to snag seats for the watch party. But I think I've talked a lot about the young guys, especially on the back end, that have stepped in and played a critical role. "We've never been this far before, and it's a great feeling".

The Capitals, mind you, have been the better team for the bulk of the series. They did win a few categories. Regardless of what happened in the past, the Oilers have an opportunity tonight to undo the damage done to them by those freaky non-interference calls. Ovechkin and crew can't get it done and maybe it's time for a culture change in Washington. On the other side, the Eastern Conference finals matchup is set, with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Ottawa Senators battling for their conference's spot in the Stanley Cup Finals. Anaheim's offence ignited through the final 40 minutes and put way too much pressure on the Oilers. He hasn't been his dominant self since being concussed in the early going of Game 3.

NOTES: With Oilers D Andrej Sekera (undisclosed injury) out for the series, Eric Gryba was active for the second straight game.

Anaheim has lost four consecutive Game 7s at home.

Meanwhile in Anaheim, mainstays Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf have been a nuisance for Oilers netminder Cam Talbot. I've won a Game 7 (in Vancouver) - you definitely learn more from your losses.

Patrick Maroon would like nothing more than to extend his former team's Game 7 woes another year.

But after a season where McDavid showed offensive production comes easy for him even in the big league, realizing that he needs to learn how to shake the tight checking of the playoffs gives him something to work on. He has 114 points in 114 playoff games. Seems to me that someone, who thinks that something as grandiose as a federal election could be fixed, could also think that a simple sports series could be fixed too without labeling the proponents as former alien abductees.
