Cardinals sweep doubleheader from Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez seen against the Baltimore Orioles earlier this month has been activated from the disabled list and will take the mound against the Tampa Bay Rays at Rogers Centre on Sunday

Leadoff man Dexter Fowler went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, scoring twice, and Matt Adams and Greg Garcia added three hits apiece.

Carlos Martinez allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings. He's been arguably the best pitcher on the staff to open the season, and has parlayed his strong performance in the World Baseball Classic into ace level performance in the MLB regular season. He also walked three batters and was charged with one balk. "We're struggling right now with the squad to get wins but everyone's doing what they need to be doing between each start to make sure they're prepared and ready to go out there".

Toles hit a tie-breaking single with the bases loaded, Kike Hernandez had a sacrifice fly and Turner extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single.

"Overall it's a good day", St. Louis Manager Mike Matheny said.

Leading 3-1 over the Tampa Rays in the top of the eighth, Toronto starter Marcus Stroman gave up a lead off home run to Corey Dickerson and was then replaced by Jason Grilli who was taken deep by Evan Longoria, tying the game 3-3. The bomb was Fowler's third home run of the season.

The Blue Jays added to the lead in the bottom of sixth on Smoak's fourth homer, a drive to center.

You would be embarrassed if your child's Little League team executed as poorly as the Cardinals did Tuesday night while giving that game away.

Last-place Toronto got swept in a doubleheader at St. Louis on Thursday, then lost a late lead in the series opener against the Rays on Friday.

The second victory of the day was a bit more traditional: the Cards scored six runs in their first four innings, and the Jays could only scratch out four before Trevor Rosenthal closed the game out.

So, on comes Biagini, among the least culpable of that bull bunch, and everybody at the Rogers Centre is doubtless thinking how the Jays can get out of this jam with minimum damage, when maximum has so frequently been the formula.

"It felt really good to get picked", Joshua said of getting picked before his first pitch.

There were two other bags, bearing Blue Jays insignia, which were also being utilized, along with an oversized cardboard box. I don't know what that means.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons admits that they are painful losses. Osuna, the closer, already has three blown saves this year, but he pitched a clean ninth inning on Saturday to pick up his second save of the season.

"We didn't win so it's tough to feel any type of way", Stroman said.

Grichuk had a two-out RBI single in the seventh and Carpenter singled home a run in the eighth. "I always thought it was more likely that the best players are able to just be themselves in the biggest situations, because a lot of time it's tempting to tighten up and overthink things".

Sucre's RBI-single scored Beckham to tie the game in the second. Randal Grichuk followed with an infield single and scored on Matt Adams' opposite-field double into the left-field corner.

Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez remains on pace to come off the DL and start Sunday's series finale after throwing a side session Friday.

In his career, Liriano is 2-3 with a 5.85 ERA and 49 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.

There were several reasons for the request, most notably that Thursday's double dip came at the end of a gruelling seven-game road trip that included an overnight flight from California on Monday and a pair of extra-inning games.
