Last-Second Shot Lifts UNC Over Kentucky

De'Aaron Fox and Kentucky take on North Carolina for a trip to the Final Four

It has been 24 hours since Huntersville native Luke Maye sank a game-winning shot to propel the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team into the Final Four. Luke Maye made the winning jumper with 0.3 seconds left for a 75-73 victory over Kentucky. That gets given to the best player on the team that wins the national title, and I just don't see any feasible way that SC can win a national title without Thornwell doing what he's been doing for the last two weeks.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were the top seed in their region, and come into the game with a 31-7 record.

De'Aaron Fox also hit a trey after North Carolina went on a 12-0 to take a six-point lead late in the game.

Freshman Malik Monk (Lepanto, Bentonville High School) tried to lift the Wildcats with two three-pointers in 30 seconds that tied the game 73-73 with seven seconds to play, but North Carolina had an answer.

"I just shot it and luckily, it went in", Maye said. 'It was a great feeling'.

The Wildcats end the year at 32-and-6, falling short of their third Final Four appearance in the past four seasons. The sharp-shooting guard scored 47 points in a 103-100 win over Final Four participant North Carolina and was Southeastern Conference Player of the Year after leading the team in scoring. "I just wish we could have played the first half with a full roster", Kentucky coach John Calipari said.

These teams played on December 17, with Kentucky winning 103-100 as Monk knocked down the game-winning shot.

"To play 33 minutes with that toughness and he can't really shoot the ball", Williams said.

Higgins is expected to work the Final Four in Glendale, Arizona. Following that game, college basketball analysts across the country said that they wouldn't be surprised if the two teams met again deep into the month of March. "It was 7.2, I think, when they scored and I was just screaming 'go, go, go.' And Theo goes down the court and finds Luke, and Luke made a big-time shot". Two years ago, ESPN aired a "30 for 30" documentary called "I Hate Christian Laettner".

The Wildcats suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Sweet 16 to Xavier and Sean Miller remains Final Four-less. SC easily handled the University of Florida to move on to the Final Four where they will first meet up with Gonzaga.

"They made a big three".

Experience trumps luck, and the Tar Heels not only have experience with all five starters juniors or seniors, they have a program where national titles are the expectation. North Carolina. The Tar Heels like to play fast.

OR closed to 34-21 midway through the second quarter, but UConn put away the game by scoring 15 of the final 18 points of the half. Gonzaga and SC have never played. North Carolina's Justin Jackson was named the ACC Player of the Year, Gonzaga's Nigel Williams-Goss was the WCC Player of the Year, Oregon's Dillon Brooks was the Pac-12 Player of the Year and South Carolina's Sindarius Thornwell was the SEC Player of the Year.
