"Maricopa County, Ariz., replaced Harris County, Texas, as the county with the nation's highest annual population growth, according to U.S. Census Bureaupopulation estimates released today", said a release by the bureau.
The U.S. Census Bureau has released its 2016 population estimates for U.S. counties and metro areas. Births outnumbered deaths in the county 23,209 to 18,231, and 4,279 people moved into the county from foreign countries.
The reversal comes as a disappointment, given the county's estimated growth of more than 4,000 people in 2013 and 2014.
It was a mixed bag in other parts of Missouri. What spiked was "net domestic outmigration". "People want to live here".
Xuan Liu, manager of research and data analysis for the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, told The Detroit News in an email that education resources, a growing knowledge-based economy and quality of life could be draws for Washtenaw County. On the other end of the spectrum, Ontonagon and Gogebic saw the largest percent population declines over the period with losses of 12.4 and 7.0 percent, respectively. "Every single county in NY, except for three, had net out-domestic migration".
Between 2010 and 2016, the most notable population gain was in the Bronx, whose population rose 5.1 percent - for a total of 1,455,720 residents, records show.
Baltimore's large population loss previous year isn't good news, but it's also likely not the direct result of the riots following Freddie Gray's death or the spike in violence that followed.
Statewide, the momentum of population gain is moving west to Kent County, the home of Grand Rapids. The bureau collected population data from july of 2015 to July of 2016.
The general patterns in these counties where the same as in Cook County. When those tax hikes are in place, the Chicago area will likely lose more population due to taxation. "The clues have been there for a few years now".
Among metropolitan areas, the Syracuse region suffered the sixth worst numerical population loss in the country. Los Angeles County still sits in the No. 1 spot, and Cook County in IL is second.
Hamilton County gained 1,351 residents to take its population to 809,099.
Even so, County Planner Jason Kemper noted that the changes from year to year are generally small percentages. It grew by 3.9 percent.
Cook County in IL was the biggest numerical loser of all the counties in the US, with its population shrinking by 21,324 between 2015 and 2016.
"The city has more extremes of the haves and have nots", Paral said, noting how Chicago's black population has been decreasing in recent years. The net population loss was 59,648. That puts our birth rate at 40th in the nation. However, that's being offset by worldwide migration.
Indeed, if there is one place city leaders should focus to stabilize and increase Baltimore's population, it would be the schools.
