Democrats elect former Labor Secretary Tom Perez as new chairman

On leaving the race, Buttigieg urged the next chairman and Democrats to look beyond Washington, organize better for non-presidential elections and "pay attention to communities like ours, in the heartland of the country - not as an exotic species but as your fellow Americans". Democrats are at a historic weak point, with little power in the U.S. Capitol and control of only a handful of state Legislatures across the nation. Republicans occupy the White House, run both chambers of Congress and control about two-thirds of US statehouses.
Since then, she's made significant efforts to bridge the gap between the party's more traditional base and its growing legion of activists.
In his speech to DNC voters before the voting, Perez said that all Democrats would leave united and that Democrats are the party of inclusion in every zip code. Perez was a favorite of the Democratic establishment, while Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, was backed heavily by the more liberal, Bernie Sanders-influenced contingent of the party.
Perez announced he would make Ellison "deputy chairman" of the DNC and embraced him from the podium after the vote.
ABC's "This Week": Perez and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will appear on the show, as will President Trump's deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Perez has taken over the seat from Interim DNC Chair Donna Brazile who became the chairman after the resignation of Rep. "I think he got a lot of national recognition from this, so I don't think it hurt him that he got involved".
Perez and Ellison were two of seven candidates vying to head the DNC, including Sally Boynton Brown of Idaho, South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg, former Fox News analyst Jehmu Greene, US veteran Sam Ronan, and Wisconsin lawyer Peter Peckarsky.
Despite his significant support, Ellison was criticized by some major party donors, including Haim Saban, who in December said that he was "clearly an anti-Semite and anti-Israel individual". Ellison had been one of the few members of Congress to publicly back Sanders' presidential bid. US Democrats, licking their wounds from last year's election debacle, will pick a new leader on February 25, 2017 to take the fight to President Donald Trump and his Republicans.
During the first round of voting, Perez fell just one vote short of the number needed to win the chair.
Republican National Committee chairman Ronna McDaniel, who unlike her Democratic counterpart was selected in an uncontested election, also labeled Perez as an "insider".
"The reality is that this was a hard choice between a number of solid progressive candidates all with track records of positive organizational development and grassroots campaign experience", Mancini said in a release. And Perez, who was endorsed by former Vice President Joseph Biden, was viewed as one of the more progressive voices during his tenure in the Obama administration.
