As President Trump presses to repeal the Affordable Care Act (also known as "Obamacare"), congressional Republicans are facing the challenges of developing a replacement, putting 75,000 Mainers at risk of losing health care.

The Affordable Care Act was attacked unfairly from the beginning and was not well-supported by some Democrats, especially in this area.

But the governor says an alternative plan presented by House Speaker Paul Ryan will leave Americans without coverage. House, DOJ seek delay in ObamaCare lawsuit House, Justice Department ask for delay in ObamaCare lawsuit MORE (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee. "We owe it to those people who are less fortunate to not take this coverage away from them". Now that insurers are able to offer worse coverage under a lower actuarial value, tax credits could be based on the cost of a plan that only covers 66% of costs, making coverage less affordable. High costs in that sector are the main reason many Republicans-including the president-have labeled the ACA a "failing system". But if millions of people who gained access to health insurance suddenly find themselves without coverage once again, many of them are going to blame the people who wrote the cancellation notice.

Despite their harsh criticism of Obamacare, Republicans are far from agreeing on any replacement.

Because of the pools, insurers were allowed to reject individuals likely to have high expenses. Charity doesn't come close to meeting many people's needs.

That guts the individual and most business mandates and will send the government-sponsored health care exchanges into a death spiral.

Then, step by step, we will build better systems that give Americans access to truly affordable health care.

Those won't solve the cost problem, and without a penalty for non-participation, even more healthy individuals will decide to go without health insurance.

What are the "pre-existing conditions" that get excluded?

Insurance companies lost considerable sums a year ago and raised premiums for 2017 by an average of 25 percent.

Countries that offer universal health insurance have a solidarity that is inclusive.

Miller lauded the ACA for protecting even those who buy private insurance because health insurance plans are now required to provide free preventive care services and remove annual and lifetime limits on covered benefits.
