James Cook: Lions have a lot to overcome vs. Seahawks

Thomas Rawls ran for 161 yards and a touchdown

The 11-year veteran replaces Tyler Lockett, who broke his leg in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on December 24.

Russell Wilson completed 23 of 30 passes for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Of course, they did most of that damage at home, but they've managed to keep things close when every indication is that they shouldn't.

It was Rawls who was the star of the game for the Seahawks, giving them a much-needed boost in the running back and setting a Seattle postseason record with 161 yards on 27 carries, eclipsing Marhawn Lynch's 156 in 2014. There was an egregiously missed interference call when Lions wide receiver T.J. Jones was dragged down by a Seahawks defender while chasing a Stafford pass.

Quarterback Russell Wilson approved. One boon to the Lions' chances is that the Seahawks, without free safety Earl Thomas, have been hopeless at stopping deep passes. Enter Tyler Ott. The second year man out of Harvard will be assuming all long snapping duties against the Lions. Their defense has been solid, but hasn't been good in the second half of the season at causing turnovers. They just need to be mediocre to give the team a shot to put points on the board. However, ankle and knee injuries have limited the mobility of one of the most efficient multi-dimensional QBs in National Football League history (8.0 yards per pass attempt, 4th all-time, and 5.6 yards per rushing attempt). Detroit's right side is dominant with tackle Haloli Ngata and end Ziggy Ansah - and they will pose issues for Seattle's Ifedi and right tackle Garry Gilliam. WHY THE LIONS WILL COVER Jeremy Reisman is the managing editor of Pride of Detroit.

"His resilience has been there", Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said of Rawls before the meeting with the Lions.

But the Lions have displayed a propensity to overcome the odds this season.

The Seahawks rushed 38 times for 177 yards on Saturday.

One could nearly feel the entire franchise and stadium exhale, that maybe the offense had found its lost running game and, thus, its offense.

Thomas Rawls didn't get to play in the playoffs as a rookie. The Lions previously listed Swanson as questionable.

"The third quarters have not been kind to us", Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said.

The Lions are in the playoffs for the second time in the past three seasons. But what had players and coaches excited following Saturday's win was that the formula they have come to count on again seems available. Stafford's pass was off Tate's hands and the Lions punted quickly.

For the last two weeks, Zach Zenner has attacked the line with great effectiveness in the first half and looked well on his way to rushing for 100 yards.

This is the first year that the Seattle Seahawks have taken a significant step back in rushing - a strong suit since their Super Bowl winning season.

Burchfield: The numbers would say Kerry Hyder, who leads the team with eight sacks.

There is good reason the Lions are more than a touchdown underdog Saturday night. Seattle is 7-3 in the playoffs since 2012. In two career meetings with Detroit, he has 523 passing yards, three TDs and one interception.

While Rawls did the grunt work, Richardson filled the highlight reel with a trio of catches. He threw five over their first 12. He ranked fourth in the NFC with 11.5 sacks this season and has six sacks in his past six home games.

Detroit ended the season allowing 114 (New York Giants), 164 (Dallas), 153 (Green Bay) and 177 (Seattle) yards on the ground to their last four opponents.
