Why the Seahawks Should Defeat the 49ers

The Seahawks head coach said Tuesday that the franchise wanted to retain its former second-round pick when he hit the open market, but Seattle's contract terms weren't properly presented to Tate, who eventually left for the Detroit Lions.

SEATTLE KEY TRENDS: The Seahawks are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games coming off an ATS loss and are 7-1 against the number in their last eight games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in their previous game.

"He's a great player and a great athlete, and the more activity the better for him", Carroll said. "I'm never in that frame of mind". I don't even know what the numbers were at the time, but that wasn't the point. "Just thought we needed to do something to do what we could to protect ourselves for next week". They were up against the worst San Francisco defence in 70 years, having allowed more touchdowns, points and rushing yards this year than any season since 1946.

But ultimately, the decision worked out as backup quarterback Trevone Boykin led a drive to kill the last 5:42 while the Falcons held on to win and keep the No. 2 seed.

He liked that snap against the 49ers even less. He was slowed much of the season by an early knee injury, and just when he started returning to form, he suffered a season-ending broken leg on Christmas Eve against Arizona.

According to USA Today's Tom Pelissero, Seattle offensive line/assistant head coach Tom Cable may get a second chance in charge of an National Football League squad after a controversial tenure with the Oakland Raiders from 2008 to 2010 that ended amid accusations of punching an assistant coach and domestic violence allegations from both an ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend.

"He (Reed) has to know he can't be doing anything to jeopardize the team". The 49ers have not proven they can defeat anyone other than the Los Angeles Rams this season and are playing for draft position. "You're not going to get a guy that's going to be like him".

Fights. Ejections. A general manager and a coach fired around the game. "I said, 'hey little guy, can't you get in the end zone there?' In my opinion I think he's the comeback player of the year to overcome the injuries he's had".

Seattle TE Luke Wilson is the second option among Seattle's tight ends, but has two TD catches in the last three weeks. He ranks seventh in yards per attempt (7.7), 13th in completion percentage (64.7) and 14th in passer rating (92.6). Eric Ebron posted 61 yards in six catches while Anquan Boldin had 57 yards and a touchdown in four receptions.

"A ridiculous catch", Carroll marveled later.

Still though, Seattle gave a performance against San Francisco that should have the team confident as they approach the first round of the playoffs next week. If he plays like that in the playoffs, Seattle just might find itself back in the Super Bowl for the third time in four seasons. Soon after taking the deal, Tate went on Seattle radio station 710 AM and called the offer from the Seahawks "laughable".

But if the regular season had a few more bumps and bruises than expected, Carroll said that's all forgotten now. "I don't care where you at, if you can do that, you have got fantastic talent".

Ott knew the Seattle situation well - he had a workout with the Seahawks in September, at which time he said the team told him that if anything happened with Frese he was next on the list.
