Derek Carr breaks fibula in win over Colts

Derek Carr

On the same Saturday in NFL Week 16 when Marcus Mariota suffered a season-ending broken fibula, the Oakland Raiders may have lost their young star quarterback, Derek Carr, as well.

Carr signaled for the Raiders' trainers frantically with a look of shock on his face, while mouthing the words "it's broke" and grasping at his lower right leg.

Carr was helped to the sidelines and could not put any weight on his foot.

The Raiders are 12-3 and in position to get a first-round playoff bye if they win the AFC West. So the Colts have one of the rarest pieces in football - a franchise quarterback - and are going to miss the playoffs for the second-straight year. Matt McCloin replaced him at quarterback to finish out the game. On the other hand, a loss at home to the Colts and a Kansas City win at Arrowhead Stadium over Denver (Dec. 25), will leave the Raiders' postseason positioning in limbo until week 17.

Their performances against the Chiefs made it fair to question the Raiders' viability against top-tier teams in January even with Carr, but the threat of their explosive offense certainly would make that troika of contenders nervous. Arizona went 50 yards in the final minute and Catanzaro's kick was good, delivering a huge blow to Seattle's chances at the No. 2 seed in the NFC. "I feel like I failed". He's headed to the Raiders locker room to meet with his family. Latavius Murray is averaging 4.2 yards and has 12 touchdowns on 175 rushing attempts while rookie Jalen Richard offers solid backup support with 422 yards on 74 carries. Because of more squandered opportunities than we have time to rehash, their playoff hopes dangle by a thread.

Or that, after forcing a pair of Andrew Luck interceptions with pressure, Khalil Mack should be honing in on the league's defensive player of the year award.

Coming into Sunday, the Colts had allowed just two touchdowns in their three previous games. It means big plays and more touchdowns, a big reason the Raiders have won 11 games.
