Fourth consecutive victory for the Giants

The Bengals opened second half with a bang, as rookie returner Alex Erickson brought back the opening kickoff 84 yards to the NY 13.

After the Giants went three-and-out, Erickson did it again, this time with an 18-yard punt return that gave his team excellent starting field position.

The Bengals didn't lack for chances to pull ahead of the Giants in the fourth quarter of Monday night's 21-20 loss.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (5-3): Quarterback Eli Manning is coming off a four-touchdown performance against Philadelphia, the third time he has tossed at least three scoring passes in a game this season, but he also was picked off twice for the third time.

The UFC star provided "inspiration" for the Giants receiver making history after he beat Eddie Alvarez in the main event at the first MMA fight in NY state history.

It only took Beckham 36 games, surpassing San Diego Chargers Lance Alworth who previously held the record with 37 games. I kind of had some late inspiration.

First-year coach Ben McAdoo shares Beckham's enthusiasm, if not his pronouncement that they're Super Bowl ready. I have confidence in our offense and I have confidence in the way we prepare and practice for the green zone.

The fourth quarter started with an incomplete pass intended for tight end Will Tye.

But there's no greater difference than what's showing up in the play of Collins, who was NFC Defensive Player of the Week each of the past two weeks and kept the train rolling with a fourth-quarter interception of Andy Dalton on Monday.

Cincinnati was held to 264 total yards and was only 2 of 11 on third down.

But, there's been little indication over the past month that Marvin Lewis' team is good enough to win five of its last seven games, which very likely is what it would take.

"We were going to go for it", McAdoo said after the game. "We can't let him get beat up like that". Beckham seems to think so, but we'll reserve judgment until we see a few more of these fourth-quarter closeouts. "We've got to take a good, hard look at what we're doing and correct the things that are hurting us".

The Giants will know more about these injuries later in the week when they hit the field to practice in preparation for the Bears.

The Bengals are 3-5-1. Odell Beckham Jr. had 10 receptions for 97 yards, and Rasheed Jennings had 87 yards rushing for a ground game that was averaging less than 70 yards through eight games. I mean, this isn't the 1970s or the era of 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

The Giants got on the board first when Manning connected with rookie tight end Jerell Adams on a 10-yard scoring pass to give NY the 7-0 lead. And rookie Tyler Boyd dropped a possible touchdown catch in the third, forcing Mike Nugent's 38-yard field goal.

One other big hindrance to the Giants' chances: the Cowboys are one of the best teams in football and have a two-game lead in the division.

In addition to sacking Dalton three times, the Giants hurried him into many off-target throws as he completed just 16 of 29 passes for 204 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
