How California can be a role model for legal weed

Americans woke up Wednesday morning to find the nation's drug-policy landscape radically altered.

Four other states were voting on legalizing recreational marijuana - Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Arizona. A huge movement in California, Massachusetts and Nevada has resulted in the legalization of the drug for recreational drug in those states, suggesting a groundswell of support for weed that could lead to nationwide legalization sooner rather than later.

The federal government cannot, he explained, force states to reintroduce marijuana prohibition, and it has only limited power over what it can tell a state its marijuana policies should be.

Question 1 would set up a framework to regulate, tax and sell recreational marijuana in Maine. But when asked about Colorado's model of legalized marijuana past year, he said, "I think it's bad, and I feel strongly about it".

Last May, the Congress submitted a marijuana measure to allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to recommend medical marijuana to veterans in the states where marijuana is legal. "His most likely appointees to senior law enforcement positions - Rudy Giuliani and Chris Christie - are no friends of marijuana reform, nor is his vice president".

The answer? You would get charged with a crime if you were pulled over in CT, since recreational marijuana is illegal here. "And, it's also very vague as to what the state's going to do around those issues right now", adds Fish.

Washington and Colorado voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2012.

Recreational use is legal in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and the District of Columbia. And some of these states' laws also prevent former felons from entering the legal marijuana business, as Jay Z pointed out in a New York Times op-ed - even if their felony was for selling weed before it was legal.

Like it or not, the Green Rush is now upon us.

California alone, the most populous state in the union, could bring in more than $1 billion in annual tax revenue, based on a forecast from the Tax Foundation.

"It seems that Canada may be part of an emerging consensus", Kaiser said in an interview. But his political alliances leave some reformers less than sanguine about a Trump administration.

All of the marijuana sold in ME will also be grown in ME, he said. "It's actually building from the ground up every state that goes online", said Provencio. Only four citations were issued in 2014 and 2015, the state's legislative analyst says. Marijuana would be taxed at 10 percent and subject to local restrictions.
