Mark Rylance wins Oscar for best supporting actor

"I don't know how they separate my acting from your glorious acting and these wonderful films that you're in", said Rylance.

In Bridge of Spies, Rylance played real-life Soviet intelligence officer Rudolf Abel, who was arrested by United States authorities in NY in 1957 and charged with conspiracy.

Oscar for Best Cinematography went to Emmanuel Lubezki for "The Revenant" leaving behind "Carol", "The Hateful Eight", "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Sicario".

"I've always just adored stories, hearing them, seeing them, being in them", Rylance said before thanking director Steven Spielberg and co-star Tom Hanks.

The competition for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar was tight with Rylance, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Hardy, Mark Ruffalo and Christian Bale all fighting for the coveted award.

This Oscars nomination and win marks Rylance's first.

Smith picked up the Best Original Song Oscar for Writing's On The Wall, which he co-wrote with fellow Briton Jimmy Napes for the latest James Bond movie Spectre.

He laughed: "I couldn't even get cast as an Italian". So for me, to get a chance to work with one of the greatest storytellers of our times, Steven Spielberg, has been such an honour.

Host Chris Rock opened the awards ceremony with a monologue confronting concerns about racism in Hollywood. And then you go home and you analyze it.

The comedian, who welcomed the audience in the Dolby Theatre to the "white People's Choice Awards", cracked a series of jokes about the race issue and added the controversy over police shootings of black suspects in the U.S. to his targets.

He didn't win any, although at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards, he did take home the Best Supporting Actor trophy for Creed.

And The Revenant was sure to have a huge night either way with it receiving not only the Best Supporting Actor nominations, but also 11 other nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and, of course, Best Actor. And I think, if you ever wondered about acting with Tom Hanks, would it help.
